Drum-Type Wood Chipper Machine Overview

A powerful and efficient machine designed for industrial-scale wood processing

There are two kinds of wood chippers, depending on the structure design: disc-type wood chippers and drum-type wood chippers. Disc wood chipper is usually used in papermaking industries to process wood logs, while drum wood chipper can process both wood logs and agro stalks in various sizes. We supply both types of wood chipper machines. The capacities range from 0.8 t/h to 25 t/h. Feel free to contact us for a free consultation. We are glad to help you choose the right machines.

The Drum Type Wood Chipper Machine is a heavy-duty machine that cuts and chips logs, branches, slabs, and other wood waste into uniform wood chips. It operates using a large rotating drum equipped with knives and is commonly used in wood chip mills, pulp & paper industries, biomass power plants, and wood pellet production lines. The wood chipper machine can be set on a frame and mounted on wheels to be portable for various working environments.

Drum-Type Wood Chipper Machine Working Principle

Wood materials are fed into the infeed chute, where they come into contact with the rotating drum (rotor) equipped with mounted blades (knives). As the drum spins at high speed, the knives slice the wood against a stationary counter blade, producing uniform-sized wood chips. The chips are then discharged through an outlet chute or via a conveyor.

    Drum Type Wood Chipper Machine
    1. Wood Materials Feeding. Raw materials such as logs, branches, or wood waste are loaded into the feeding hopper (manually or via conveyor).
    2. Material Guidance. The material is guided into the chipping chamber by gravity and hydraulic feeding rollers.
    3. Drum Rotation Begins. A horizontal rotating drum begins to spin at high speed.
    4. Knife Engagement. The drum is equipped with sharp knives (blades) mounted on its surface. As the drum rotates, these knives slice the incoming wood against a fixed counter blade (anvil).
    5. Chipping Process. The material is cut into uniform wood chips as it passes between the rotating knives and the fixed blade.
    6. Size Control. The chip length is controlled by: Knife position, Drum speed, Feed speed, and Distance between the knife and counter blade.
    7. Wood Chips Discharge. The finished wood chips are pushed out through the discharge outlet by the rotating drum or conveyor.
    8. Chips Collection or Conveying. The chips are collected manually, fed into storage, or transferred via conveyor or cyclone to the next processing step (e.g., drying or pelletizing).
