EFB Pellet Production Line Overview

Turn Palm Waste into High-Value Biofuel

This EFB pellet production line is a complete, continuous system designed to convert Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB) — a waste product from the palm oil mill plant — into high-quality biomass pellets. These pellets serve as a renewable energy source suitable for industrial boilers, power plants, and heating systems. Engineered for efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness, this production line integrates all critical processes: from raw material preparation to pellet packaging.

If you are planning to build your own EFB pellet plant, this EFB pellet production line may be a good choice, since this is the most popular EFB pellet production configuration. This 1T/h EFB pellet production line has a compact structure, so it is easy to operate and of high performance. Besides, the key parts adopt high-quality alloy steel wear-resisting material, prolonging the service life 5 to 7 times, greatly reducing your production cost and expenses.

What is EFB (Empty Fruit Bunch)?

Palm fiber, empty fruit bunch (EFB), and palm kernel are fibrous residues left after oil is extracted from fresh fruit bunches in palm oil mills. They are abundant in palm-producing countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Colombia, Nigeria, and Thailand. EFB is bulky, moist (50–65%), and difficult to manage without processing, making pelletizing an ideal solution. The finished EFB pellets are efficient and clean when burning. A small volume of burning can produce a large amount of heat. Pelletizing EFB fiber into pellet fuel can save you a lot of energy and help you make profits.

Specification of EFB Pellet

  • Pellet Diameter: 6–8 mm
  • Pellet Length: 20–40 mm
  • Bulk Density: 650–750 kg/m³
  • Calorific Value: 4200–4600 kcal/kg
  • Moisture Content: ≤10%
  • Ash Content: 3–5%

Applications of EFB Pellets

  • Biomass power plants
  • Industrial steam boilers
  • District heating systems
  • Pellet fuel trading/export
  • Cement and paper industries
  • Carbon credits. Green energy projects

Process Flow of the 1t/h EFB Pellet Production Line

    1. EFB Shredding

    • Equipment: EFB Shredder
    • Function: Breaks large, moist EFBs into loose, coarse fibers (10–50 mm). This empty fruit bunch shredder machine is a drum-type machine to shred EFB into fiber status to improve the EFB utilization rate.
    • Features: Handles raw EFB with high moisture and toughness.

    2. EFB Fiber Crushing

    • Equipment: CF1000 EFB Fiber Crushing Machine
    • Function: Reduces shredded fiber into fine particles (3–10 mm).
    • Goal: Achieve a consistent particle size for efficient pelletizing.

The EFB fiber crushing machine is technically applied to crush the EFB fiber into small pieces for the pelletizing process. Usually, this machine can be combined with the EFB shredder machine. The materials for processing are delivered by a conveying belt, equipped with a high-intensity magnetic separator to sieve metals to avoid damaging the cutter, and a safety vertical roller to protect hands.

    3. EFB Fiber Drying

    • Equipment: Rotary Drum Dryer
    • Function: Reduces moisture content from ~50–60% down to 10–15%.
    • Heat Source: Biomass burner, gas, diesel, or steam.

The best moisture content for pelletizing is about 13-15%, while the moisture content in EFB is about 50%~60%, so a drying process is necessary before making it into renewable pellets to meet the energy demand of industries. Our Rotary Dryer is specially designed for drying EFB material, which can realize to reduce the moisture from 60% to 10% one time in large scale. Besides, its stove is fueled by sawdust, wasted wood, or coal, which can save on electricity consumption.

    4. EFB Pelletizing
Equipment: MZLH420 Ring Die Pellet Mill
Output: 6–8 mm EFB pellets with density >1.0 t/m³.
Capacity: ~1 ton/hour (actual output may vary with material condition).
Features: Heavy-duty gearbox, stainless steel die, auto lubrication.

MZLH Wood Ring Die Pellet Mill is the most suitable for compressing high-density biomass materials such as hardwood, palm fiber, and EFB (empty fruit bunch). It adopts a highly accurate gear drive, with an output of about 20% higher than the belt drive. The specially designed feed conditioner adopts the frequency-conversion speed regulating control to guarantee EFB pellets.

    5. Pellet Cooling

    • Equipment: Counterflow Pellet Cooler
    • Function: Reduces pellet temperature from ~80°C to ambient.
    • Benefit: Prevents breakage and increases storage life.

After the pelletizing process, the temperature of the EFB pellet is about 60-80 degrees, and the moisture content is about 15%, so a pellet cooler is needed to cool the pellets and reduce moisture. A SKLN1.5 type counter flow cooler is included in this EFB pellet production line.

    6. Pellet Screening Packing

    • Equipment: Pellet Screener and Pellet Packing Machine
    • Function: Separates fines and broken pellets
    • Options: 10kg, 25kg, 50kg bags or bulk loading.
    • Benefit: Easy transportation and retail distribution.

After cooling and screening, the packing process is necessary to protect the EFB pellet from damp and dust. The packing machine adopts two weighing bodies and a high-speed weighing system, which can be used alternately or simultaneously, ensuring high efficiency and flexibility.

      EFB Pellet Production Line FAQs

An EFB pellet production line is a complete system designed to process empty fruit bunches (EFB) from palm oil mills into biomass pellets. The line includes shredding, crushing, drying, pelletizing, cooling, screening, and packing equipment.

While the pellet production line is optimized for EFB, it can also process other fibrous biomass materials such as:
      Palm fiber
      Coconut husks
      Bagasse
      Straw
      Wood shavings (with adjustments)

The ideal moisture content for pelletizing is 10% to 15%. Raw EFB usually contains 50–65% moisture and must be dried using a rotary dryer before pelletizing.

The material should be crushed to 3–10 mm particle size. This ensures consistent pellet quality and reduces strain on the pellet mill.

Typically, 3–5 workers are needed per shift:
      1 for feeding
1 for monitoring the control panel
1–2 for maintenance, output, and packaging

Installation time depends on the setup and site readiness, but typically takes 10 to 20 days, including testing and operator training.

Yes. EFB pellets are in demand in many countries, especially for biomass power plants. They meet international standards if properly processed and packed.
